BESAFE

BESAFE was a multi-year, self-funded (now completed) project in which DBI, in collaboration with several partners, gained new knowledge about battery fires and explosions. The project aimed to achieve a better understanding of the behavior of lithium-ion batteries by examining emissions, the battery’s surface temperatures, mass loss, the burning behavior - including the explosive atmospheres - as well as the effect of water mist on explosions through a series of experiments conducted at DBI’s mobile test facility. You can find the project report at the bottom of this page.

Within the project, DBI was responsible for the design of the project (with the input of other project partners), design and perform tests, carry out data analysis, compile and consult with a panel of international experts and prepare the project report.

Project partners: Center for Rescue and Safety (RESC), Greater Copenhagen Fire Department, Stena Recycling, EM-SAFE Fire Safety A/S (formerly known as Danfoss Fire Safety)and Lund University,

  • The Center for Rescue and Safety (RESC) and Greater Copenhagen Fire Department carried out fire suppression activities and evaluated and developed methodologies for responding to battery fires.
  • Stena Recycling supplied the lithium-ion batteries used in the respective tests.
  • EM-SAFE Fire Safety A/S (formerly known as Danfoss Fire Safety) provided the water mist system including the pump, piping, nozzles and the pressure control.
  • Lund University provided expertise in measuring and characterization of particles.

The project began in November 2023 and was completed in April 2025.

Nye brandstrategier efter Umoe Ventus The project began in November 2023 and was completed in April 2025.
