The aim of the project is to develop a new design for a RoRo vessel in order to achieve a cost reduction of 50% per trailer and a 70% reduction of CO2 emissions per trailer, compared to large conventional vessels in use today for around 120-mile routes.
A RoRo (roll on/roll off) vessel is a vessel type which allows passenger vehicles, lorries or cargo freight in trailers to be driven directly on board and off the vessel. A traditional RoRo vessel requires a lot of time to be spent on unloading and filling up again. The Trailer Cat project addresses this challenge.
DBI's role in the project is primarily to select and investigate alternative materials. This includes new FRP solutions to reduce the overall vessel weight. DBI's task is therefore to ensure these solutions' compliance with the fire prevention requirements. Another task is to transfer knowledge of several levels of parking garages to a maritime context. The last element is to develop a water steam system for open car decks.
