The overall aim of the E-ferry project is to use innovative and energy-efficient design, by applying advanced composite materials, to demonstrate that a 100% electrical and thereby emission-free ferry can transport passengers, cars and lorries on full scale over longer distances than seen hitherto. As from 2017-18, the ferry will be deployed in trial operation on one of the routes to Ærø: Søby-Fynshav, Søby-Faaborg or Ærøskøbing-Svendborg.

DBI's role in the project is to continuously assess design proposals from the marine architect and the other partners, and to prepare a risk analysis based on the challenges created by greater use of composite materials in relation to fires, in order to achieve final approval by the authorities.
E-ferry is a four-year project (2015-2019), supported by the EU with just over EUR 15 million via Horizon 2020.
